“What is a floating page and how do I use it?” This is a question that I hear frequently while working with clients in the Production Department. Floating pages are a great way to expand and grow your site! Floating pages are sold in sets of four and are meant to be used and reused, therefore they do not appear in your main navigation.
Since floating pages do not appear in the main navigation of your site, they are sold at a rate of four floating pages for the price of one regular page. Floating pages are a great way to spread out a lot of information on other pages, rather than having information overload on one single page.
One of our clients who came up with a creative way to use their floating pages is Rose Drive Friends Church of Yorba Linda, California. When you visit the Contact Us drop down and click on Pastoral Directory, it takes you to one of the greatest staff directory listings that I have seen on a faithHighway site.
You will notice there are images of the different pastors, which I think are a wonderful idea because it creates a great visual impact. As you click on the images of the various pastors, it links to a page for that pastor. Rather than regular pages, they decided to use floating pages.
As you can see, with all of the staff members that Rose Drive Friends Church has listed, it would definitely be too much information to have the biographies for these pastors listed on the same page. Also, while they could have used regular pages, this gives them a lower cost solution with the added benefit of being able to change them around as needed. Floating pages have definitely been a creative solution for Rose Drive Friends Church to share a wealth of information, without overloading its readers.
