I’m pretty picky when it comes to reading. I like reading material that gets to the point quickly. I tend to steer away from lengthy writings that are full of verbiage. Because of this, my writing usually tends to be short and to the point as well. Perhaps that’s because of all the journalism classes I took in college that taught me to state the facts and move on. Either way, I think it’s important when blogging to consider your readers.
When writing a blog, I usually ask myself some of the following questions:
-How long am I willing to spend reading someone else’s blog? Chances are I’ll skim the first few paragraphs and then move on to the next post.
-Will the reader gain something that they didn’t know before reading my blog? -Would I read my blog post if I wasn’t the writer?
- What’s the main point of the post? Can it be summarized in one or two sentences at the beginning of the post instead of taking a whole paragraph to get the point across?
- Is the tone of the blog conversational, argumentative, encouraging, or just a personal rant?
If you’re one of those people who can talk for hours on end and your blogs tend to go on forever…maybe consider having an outsider edit them. It never hurts to get another opinion. But keep in mind that the post is yours and your voice is the one that should be heard.
I want to hear from you- What do you look for in a blog? What do you like to write about? Read about?
