With more and more people using Facebook and Twitter, it’s no surprise to me that there are libel accusations popping up. Some people take their frustrations out in their status updates…which can lead to problems, if you’re not careful.
Two recent stories:
Twitter’s first libel accusation: Courtney Love defames Dawn Simorangkir
Employee loses job over Facebook post: Philadelphia Eagles employee shares his frustration over Brian Dawkins signing with Denver
While high profile cases are more likely to make it into the news, it still makes me think twice about what I post on Twitter and Facebook.
Wondering if something is considered libel? I found this description to be pretty thorough.
To be considered libel:
- Must be a written statement
- Must be a false statement
- Must harm the person’s reputation about who it was written
Moral of the story: If you can’t write anything nice, don’t write anything at all (unless it’s a fact and can be proved).
