Neilsen Online just came out with some internet usage stats for May 2009. I thought they were interesting and goes to show just how much time people are on the Internet.
During the month of May, the average person viewed 2,352 web pages. They spent an average of 56 seconds on each web page.
With so little time actually spent on a webpage, you want to make sure the message you want to get across to your site visitors stands out easily. If an average visitor spends less than a minute briefing content, you want the most relevant information to be what they see. Let the information they see make them want to stay on the page longer and dig deeper into the website.
Don’t make your visitor want to hurry off your page because there’s a novel’s worth of text on the first page. Keep it simple and attractive. Make them feel at home and don’t overwhelm them with unnecessary information.
