Sometimes, the same old is just that – the same old. If you are into media, communication, or just plain preaching, you should be reading and exploring information off road. You need to be checking out the other stuff you don’t normally read or review. I am not recommending an immersion in culture that goes against the grain of what you prefer. But if you are going to communicate well, you need to know what else is being said. Just because you don’t read it or listen to it does not mean it does not exist.
In a Christian world, we are competing for ears, eyes, minds and hearts. And we have got to be up to date on the various roads that are out there. For instance, for design stuff, I like to read www.smashingmagazine.com. Frequently, I listen to http://garyvaynerchuk.com/ because he is a voice being heard right now in the secular arena. I also will check out Rolling Stone Magazine, Sports Illustrated and all kinds of other stuff. And when I read blogs or Twitters, I will often click on their followers and find out what other voices are out there.
Here’s the point: we are not the only voice out there. But we are a significant voice because we represent Christ. And we need to know what’s happening around us. You just never know what you will come across that spurs on your thoughts or words.
