THE PICTURE OF THE ANOINTING

During the baptism of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him.  The “Dove” is a symbol of:

• Peace (Ge 8:11):  Noah, the dove, and olive branch
• Purity (Mt 10:16):  Jesus instructed His disciples to be as
• harmless as doves.
• Passion (Eze 7:16):  The cooing of the dove is used in the
• Scripture to signify suffering, mourning, and passion.
• Power (Ac 1:8; Lk 24:49):  The outpouring of the Holy Spirit was
• accompanied with power (Olford, 220-22).
