Connexion Christian Ministries in Lafayette, IN is a powerful new church plant. Starting in March, Connexion is already running between 100-150 every Sunday consistently. Minister of Community Life, Jason Gordon, has been a part of the mission since the beginning. faithHighway has been following him on Twitter (@jasongordon) and the church (@connexionlines) and have been excited to see the tremendous success of the church.

So, how does a church plant go from a plant team to over 100 people every Sunday in only 3 months? Jason attributed it to the efforts of their diverse church marketing plan and having a very real presence in the community. Connexion has a website with faithHighway but has also done one of faithHighway’s church commercial campaigns, “For People Like You” which has generated great feedback for the church. Jason said “people are still coming, saying they saw the TV commercials a few times, and finally decided we should probably check this place out”. He also said they have found “many people initially found us through the TV commercials, and then go to our website. So we put a connecting point on our homepage to the commercials. It’s really the combination of all these things that has made us successful.”

When we asked Jason about his advice to churches in regards to technology, he had this to say: “One of the biggest things I’ve seen, I’m not sure if it is that they’re unable or unwilling to embrace the technology our culture is engaged in, the church still hasn’t embraced technology as we should have. People write it off as something the church can’t or shouldn’t be involved in. We need to show willingness to engage in it, rather than finding a boring website that hasn’t been updated in a year through Google. Pick and choose where you can use technology, and when you do, go for it!”

One of the most unique things about this church plant is their Sunday morning coffee shop. Having leased an old restaurant/bar in downtown Lafayette, they turned the bar portion of the building into a full coffee shop. This may not seem unique at first glance, but the added bonus to connecting with visitors and members in a casual environment is the mission behind their coffee house. Partnering with Land of a Thousand Hills coffee company, the profits go back into a group that does good in underprivileged coffee producing countries. They also make microloans to widows and families of those who have been killed at the hand of genocide.  Jason says “it would be really easy to just provide coffee, but we get the opportunity to do so much more”.

That is what Connexion Christian Ministries is all about. They “want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. We want to bring that cup of cold water to someone who needs it, to be hands on with the physical needs of people”. Their mission is to “reach the unreached and connect with the unconnected”.  The staff of faithHighway is very excited to see the impact this young church is making in their community.
