First Impressions: Website fails for misleading links and annoying design

General

First Impressions is facilitated through Guest Reflections. People are asked to pick a website from a church in their area at random and review it. These sites may or may not be powered by faithHighway.

Church Location: Suwanee, GA

User Profile:

  • Female
  • 50 to 59 years old
  • Caucasian
  • Area Resident for 1 to 2 years
  • Has not attended church in the last year

Final Grade: gradeF While the site was fairly easy to navigate, it had misleading functionality, out of date content, and annoying design elements. ____________________________________________________________________________________

titleNavigation “It is easy to navigate and use, with all the pages/sections on the left hand side.” Despite this, the visitor was unable to locate either a map or directions to the church. gradeC
titleFunctionality“It was annoying to click on to some of the graphics that looked like they would link to something else, like the Outflow and the Worship Opportunities graphics and not have it go anywhere.” gradeF
titleContent“Typos and spelling errors should be fixed. When you click onto ‘Enter Here…,’ you get to a page that says ‘Not too early and not to late.’ The ‘to’ needs another o: ‘not too late.’ Update some pages. The Church School Schedule page, at the bottom, talks about programs for 2008 and Winter Quarter 2008.” gradeF
titleGraphics“Low key, low tech for the most part. A few annoying features, such as the flashing words. Misleading in some parts, with graphics that seemed like you should click on them but were just for decoration.” gradeF

What is your overall first impression of this site?

“I felt that it could have been done more professionally. I don’t think it provides the full flavor of what the church may be all about and what it offers. I thought that the church must be fairly small to have a site like this. The flashing words were annoying and, I felt, inappropriate. I did not understand some of the graphics, such as the Outflow. (I had to Google it to learn more.)”

What would make this site better?

•    Some of the pages, like the one noted above, are bare, with not much information on it. More could be added in terms of text and graphics.
•    Get rid of the flashing words.
•    There should be more of an explanation of what Outflow is.
•    There isn’t any biographical information on the minister, nor are examples of previous sermons posted. There is no listing of what upcoming sermons will be.
•    The church is on a major road, but there should still be directions/a map.

Would you visit this church based on the site?

“Definitely not.”
