This past Sunday, the city of Austin had a city-wide ministry expo called “In the City, For the City.”
It attracted thousands of local residents and provided them a one-stop shop to find information on how they can help meet the needs of the city.
I had the opportunity to volunteer at this event with my church. It was a fun experience and opened my eyes to all the opportunities available right in my own city!
A wide range of exhibitors covered the 3 stories of The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, including non-profits, churches, businesses, and schools. The exhibitors were divided up into categories like: arts and entertainment, business, media, prison ministry, prayer ministry, evangelism, pregnancy, social justice…etc.
Several local city leaders held a panel to share with those interested what the practical and physical needs of the city are: housing, education and healthcare. There was also a business forum that allowed local business men to share how they are using their businesses to meet the needs of the community.
For me, it was great to step back and see that there really are people that place the needs of others above their own. In a narcissist world, it’s sometimes hard to understand the needs of a city. This event broke down the walls between business and community and allowed an interaction that should happen more than once a year.
