Link Love Article: New Design Trends for the New Year

So what does 2010 hold?  After a year of economic turmoil, our eyes look up for a year of forward movement.  Although the market took a turn for the worst in ‘09, technology and design have continued to keep hopeful momentum.

According to WebDesignLedger we can expect great new designs for our visual consumption.  Here are some things to look out for…and of course things to avoid when getting your new website designed.  We’ve selected our top five of those listed in the aforementioned article.

  1. Oversized Logos and Headers – If you ever played Mario Brothers on Nintendo, you may have the same fondness towards the Big Land.  It a world where everything is oversized, life just seems more exciting.  Extra large headers and logos are sure to overtake the once popular splash page.
  2. Sketch and Hand-drawn Design – Have you seen those designs that integrate digital and handmade art? It’s absolutely beautiful.  A look of perfection is certainly not the ultimate goal in design right now. Get real…real is where it’s at.
  3. One Page Layouts – With simplicity and a new-found uniqueness, one page designs are on the rise.  It’s no exaggeration to say that cyberspace is a cluttered place, so finding a site that is advertisement-free and site-map free yields a sigh of relief.
  4. Interactive/Intuitive Design – Battled against the beast that is SEO, Flash has gotten a bench in many designers’ books.  But, looking into the next year, designers will get a renewed sense of gumption and venture back to the interactivity of a site designed with flash.
  5. Magazine Layouts – The mag industry has mastered the art of information architecture.  Coupling various sized images, bold typefaces and balanced text areas, websites will take a lesson from the leading magazines for structure and layout.

Whether you have a site redesign on the horizon, or are looking for ways to enhance your current design, these notes are great to keep in mind when consulting your website provider and vision team.  Let’s roll into the new year with the sweetest website eye candy yet.
