Mobile Web sites…Does your church have one?

Did you know that 55% of adults in America use a handheld device access the Internet on a regular basis? (Pew Research Jan 2010)

In 2009, nearly one-fifth (19%) of Americans used the Internet on their mobile phones, up from 2007 when only 11% used their mobiles to connect.

These statistics are just for connecting on wireless Internet- this doesn’t include everyone who uses the Internet.

Cell phones are no longer just a way to get a voice on the other end of the line…they’re becoming a one-size-fits-all way of communicating. It doesn’t matter if one friend prefers Email and one prefers Facebook. With your handheld computer…you can do it all!

How many times have you gone to a Web site on your handheld, only to find out that it’s not compatible on your mobile? Frustrating, isn’t it?

With so many people using the Internet on their phone, it’s time for churches to think about a mobile version of their site.

A few tips:

  1. Keep the information simple
  2. Avoid using animations
  3. Avoid frames and tables
  4. Have a mobile domain name that is easy to remember
  5. Avoid using pictures that take a long time to download

Making a mobile version of your site doesn’t mean you have to re-create all the content. It simply means trimming down the information to what’s important and laying it out in a way that is mobile friendly. faithHighway has experts in this field who are available to talk with you about making your, already existing Web site, mobile friendly.

Does your church already have a mobile site? Please leave a comment with the URL as examples for our readers.

Eric- One big thing we found when creating our mobile sites was to include this code: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007-07-12/make-web...
This will auto format it on a lot of devices for you with ease! Good luck!

There is a very simple entry page on St. Hilda's website where mobile phone users get to click a link especially for them. This takes them to a mobile phone page which has the barest information on it.
