In light of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, I have been amazed at how technology has made it quick and easy to make donations.
Time magazine reported (Jan. 18th issue) that within the first 24 hours after the earthquake, the Red Cross raised $800 thousand via text message donations.
Since then, Fox news reported on January 15th that over $8 million has been donated via text messaging.
This new way of giving and helping others coincides with the rest of the way our society works….immediate information available when we want and need it. It’s convenient and quick.. It just gets tacked onto your next cell phone bill. It’s astonishing to me that more people are probably willing to give to a cause if they can send a quick text than they would be if they had to write a check and mail it somewhere.
Props to the cell phone companies making this opportunity available for cell phone users.
Who knew that being able to send a single text could help so many people.
