Virtual Assistants?

So, we’ve created all these social networks to make us feel “connected” while we’re running around doing all the normal daily tasks.  We send a tweet to notify our followers that our flight was delayed and that the person next to us is singing out loud. Then we login to Facebook to feed the cows in Farmville or save a squid in Happy Aquarium. While we’re on Facebook, we’ll write on a few walls to let our friends know we’re thinking about them. Once Facebook is out of the way, we login to Linked-In to grow our networking opportunities. Then we login to our RSS reader and catch up on our blog roll. We digg, tag, blog, post, Wiki, comment and re-tweet…all in a day’s work.

Whew! Staying connected is a full time job! Ever wish you had an assistant to take care of your online social presence? Looks like in the near future, you might be able to have a virtual assistant to help you with this.

The problem I have with this is that it removes us one more degree away from actually interpersonal communication and relationships. Currently, we build relationships online…but it’s still a person to person relationship with a computer as the means of communication. With a virtual assistant, we will be 2 degrees removed from person to person relationships.

We’ll have person > to virtual assistant > to computer > to personal relationships.

Sigh…don’t get me wrong…I love the fact that social networks, like Facebook, allow me to keep up with all my friends in one centralized place. I’m just not too sure about this virtual assistant thing…Somehow it takes the personal out of personal.
