Q&A with Hopewell Baptist Church about their Facebook Page

In one of my previous blog posts on Facebook Groups vs. Pages, I compared the differences between a group and page. One of our clients, Lori Simpson from Hopewell Baptist Church in Monroe, North Carolina, sent me her church’s Facebook page.  This church is using their page for reaching out and keeping members updated on events going on with the church. If you’re wondering what to do with your church’s page, I think this is a great example. Lori was kind enough to answer a few questions. I hope you find it helpful!

You can see their fan page here.
Their website here.

Q: How long have you had a page for your church?

A: For a couple of years, we started with a group then switched to a page.

Q: How did you promote it within your church?

A: We started with a link on our website and invited those that were members of the group and encouraged them to become fans of the page.  We also put notes in the bulletin.

Q: What would you say the biggest benefit in having a page for your church has been?

A: It’s a great tool for getting the information out to people.

Q: Have there been any negative remarks or views on having a page for your church?

A: No

Q: What do you mainly use your page for? (event promotion, messages to your “fans”, uploading media, outreach…etc)

A: Promoting events, reminders and sharing pictures & videos

Q: What type of information do you think is important to have on your page?

A: Fellowship Opportunities, pictures.  Fans as well as friends of fans can get a picture of the heart of the church when they see the types of activities, the amount of participation, and the love that is shared by the folks of Hopewell.

Q: Do you monitor comments and posts?

A: Yes

Q: Who is in charge of updating the page? How many administrators are allowed to update?

A: I update the website and the facebook page.  I’m usually the only administrator.  If we have tons of pictures for an event, I’ll make a couple other regular people administrators so they can help me tag people.

Q: How often do you update information?

A: Daily

Q: Do you use your page for any kind of outreach? If so, what and how?

A: Yes, in the fall we have a large youth rally.  We opted not to print posters and send to other churches like we had in years past. We posted the information on facebook and encouraged out students and parents to share with everyone of their fb friends.  We consistantly averaged over 500 students each night.  It was amazing.  We will do the same with our upcoming Biker Day.

Q: What advice would you give a church that is just getting started with their page?

A: Consistently update your page.  Keep new information up there and encourage people to become fans.  Be patient, it takes a little while for it to spread, but eventually it becomes an excellent tool for communicating with your church family.
