This past weekend I went to a friend’s engagement party. I have known the groom for 12 years and had not met his soon-to-be bride until this weekend. I knew they had met on Facebook, but wasn’t exactly sure how it all went down…until I asked. The groom informed me that he had searched “tennis and Albuquerque” and this girl pulled into his search. He added her as a friend and she accepted his friend request and answered his message. She said she typically would disregard messages from strangers, but for whatever reason, accepted his…and the rest is history.
I have a feeling that we’re going to be hearing more and more stories from couples who met online through Facebook or another form of social media.
While many people are gung-ho about meeting up online, others are very concerned about privacy issues.
The topic of Facebook Privacy always seems to come up as a topic of discussion in my social circles. I’ve never been too worried about someone hacking into my account…but after many conversations, I’m beginning to wonder if I should be.
Facebook has recently added a new addition to their privacy controls.- Login Notifications
This security measure allows you to name certain devices that are “approved” for logging into your account. If someone tries to login from an unapproved device, you have the option of receiving a notification.
Here’s how to set it up:
- Login to your Facebook account
- Click on Account
- Then Account Settings
- Click Account Security
- Choose “yes”- that you want to receive notifications about logins from new devices
- Click Submit
Voila- now you’ll be notified via email if someone accesses your account without your permission.
