The summer can get long and uneventful after awhile. I’ve come up with a short little list of things you could do with your church. I know there are more out there…if you have a good idea that should be added to the list, please share it with us.
- Scavenger hunt in a mall- take the youth group kids to the mall, give them a list of items they have to find and buy. You’ll have to do some work in advance to find the items, know how much they cost in order to give them the correct amount of money. They can’t add to the funds. Will probably need to set a time limit and let the fun begin. It’s good if the same item can be found at different places with different prices. Be creative and go….
- Movie in the courtyard- if your church has a courtyard or any kind of outside recreational area, rent a blow up screen and show a family film. Invite families to bring blankets and picnics and enjoy a movie outdoors.
- Throw an 80’s dance party- make it a family event. Dress up and put your dancin’ shoes on.
- So, you think you’ve got talent?-depending on how big your church is, invite people to sign up for a church-wide talent show.
- Picture scavenger hunt- get small teams together for a scavenger hunt all over your city. Teams are required to take pics of the group in front of specific items on the list that you’ve created. Super fun. Then post the pics on the church’s Facebook page.
- Sunday Morning Service in the countryside- if your church is small enough and you have access to some countryside…take a short hike and have a service outdoors.
- Open Mic Night- use this as an outreach tool and invite local artists to come perform. Ask people in the church as well. Provide coffee and snacks.
- Volunteer for a sporting event like a marathon or triathlon- get your church together and volunteer for the day at a city-wide event.
- Host an evening of the arts- if you have a painter in your congregation; ask if they would be willing to help teach an evening of painting. Could combine it with an evening of worship.
- Have a bake-off- if you have small groups within your church, invite each small group to participate together as a team. Bake goodies, and have everyone be able to taste and judge.

#1 make sure they are polite, Young Life got kicked out of our local mall and asked not to come back because they showed up 1 hour before closing and hundreds of kids were running through the mall and our stores with no notice.
#2 keep it low key a lot of movies (all hollywood movies) are licensed for "personal use only" and Hollywood would not be impressed with you showing it publicly. If you don't charge for the event you are probably fine though.
