First Impressions: Site fails for cryptic content and outdated graphics

First Impressions is facilitated through Guest Reflections. People are asked to pick a website from a church in their area at random and review it. These sites may or may not be powered by faithHighway.

Church Location: Dallas, GA

Final Grade: gradeF Poor functionality, incomplete content, and outdated graphics lead to a failing site.

titleNavigation The visitor had a difficult time locating contact information, directions, or maps. gradeDminus
titleFunctionality“The general feel of the site conveys a lack of understanding and effort to use technology to its ultimate advantage. The message it sends is ‘we are not up to speed on understanding or using technology to reach people.’” gradeC
titleContent“The site seems to withhold some pertinent information as a secret, almost taking a ‘you have to come visit us before we well tell you everything you need to know’ mode. The site seems ‘unfinished’ in much of its content both from an informational and visual perspective.” gradeF
titleGraphics“Outdated, most likely geared toward older rural adults from 35 to 65. Web site was obviously done ‘in house’ as opposed to professionally.” gradeF

What is your overall first impression of this site?

“The color scheme is not attractive and the font sizing and style is not easy on the eye. Good attempt at use of graphics but the graphics have been stretched and resized outside of visually appealing parameters.”

What would make this site better?

“A new visual approach as well as pertinent and relevant content to a new visitor.”

Would you visit this church based on the site?

“No.”

faithHighway Tips for improvement…
…from a design expert:

“The content on this site indicates that they are very missions-oriented, but there are very few images on the site that portray that. The focus of the graphics seem to be on the building rather than on the work that the church is doing.”

…from a programming expert:

“None of the links on the site have Title Tags.  These would help improve the site’s search engine optimization.”

…from a web outreach expert:

“The site could really benefit from having a good balance of images included in their content. It would really beef up the impact of the text content.”
