One of my best friends is currently living in Rwanda working with the Ministry of Education to collect data and helping design a curriculum for the Ishimwe Center- a center for abandoned children in Rwanda.
I think my friend has done a great job of using social media to keep her supporters and friends updated on what is going on throughout her trip. I wanted to share her ideas with you as I’m sure many mission trips are about to take place this summer in churches all across the states.
- She set up a blog to log her journey and post pictures. Her blog includes her budget, the amount of money raised and all the details of what she’ll be doing. She also has included posts of her trip thus far, including pictures and thoughtful insight. It’s almost as if you’re experiencing life with her through her blog.
- She created a Facebook event. I have seen people create Facebook events for events leading up to a mission trip…however this one was different. It’s still showing in my profile as “happening now.” This confused me because I knew she had already left and gone, so wasn’t sure why the “event” was still showing up….then I looked and she set the event dates for the time she left the States to the time she gets back. This was clever for a couple of reasons:
- It reminds me to pray for Angela every time I sign into Facebook.
- It reminds me to check her blog and see what is going on with her.
It’s so easy to forget that you have friends on mission trips and when they are gone and when they’re back…etc. I thought this was a great way to remind your friends that you’re gone and that you need their prayers.
