The Tremendous Power of Social Media

There is tremendous power in social media. I’ve had many dinner conversations (more like debates) with some family members about Twitter, Facebook, and social media. There’s a lot of people out there that think it’s a waste of time or that is doesn’t hold the same value as face to face communication. I’ll agree, it’s not the same as face to face interaction, but there’s a tremendous value and power in social media.

Yesterday, a very dear friend of mine was laying down his fight with cancer and allowing his body to let go. At 29 years old, it was devastating news for all of us who are close to him. He is a great man with a heart of gold. His name is Preston. He’s been my friend for 17 years, and for a 28 year old, that’s a big deal.

Preston’s sister Lindsey started a “Caring Bridge” website on his behalf when he got sick last month. It’s basically a blog with a guestbook. Upon hearing the news of Preston’s decision, his guestbook has been flooded with entries from people from across the world, and from all walks of life. Preston, his family, and all the rest of us, have been able to experience how a life has touched so many through the power of social media.

Since Preston hasn’t been able to have visitors, his sister has been reading him our messages, and we have all had the opportunity to share last moments with a dear friend. My mom emailed me this morning in reflection:

“The final messages to Preston are the most unique and awesome privilege to read. I have never experienced anything like this and it is beyond description and meaning. How wonderful to reap the love of a life well lived before you die!”

Sure, sometimes social media is “watching the game” or “made fishsticks for dinner”. But it can be something so much greater. There is tremendous power in social media.
