What’s the Difference between a Computer Virus, Trojan, Spyware and Malware?

The last couple of weeks I’ve discussed security and privacy for your smart phone.  However, Internet security and privacy are just as important, if not more important than smart phone security. Here’s why.

In 2011, there have already been 73,000 new strains of malware produced, most of which are Trojans. This was a 26 percent increase from Q1 in 2010. (Panda Labs) That’s a lot and you can count on seeing more and more computer viruses pop up throughout the year.

What are the differences in a virus, Trojan, spyware and malware?

  • Virus- Causes damage to a computer. These spread by themselves to other computers and can eventually infect files on a network file system. This term is sometimes used to describe all sources of malicious attacks that are caused by Trojans, spyware, malware and adware.
  • Trojan- a program installed on a computer to gain access to the computer. They can steal information from your computer. These do not replicate by themselves, but can cause damage to your computer.
  • Spyware- programs used to monitor/log activity that is performed on a computer. These programs are not usually visible to the user and are usually secretly installed on personal computers. They collect small pieces of information such as web traffic and personal information. They can also change your computer settings which might result in slower connection speeds.
  • Malware- Programs intended to cause malicious attacks to damage your computer. Malware can include viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, adware and any other software that is designed to cause harm to your computer.
